The borate fusion technique is used widely for producing beads for analysis by X-ray Fluorescence (XRF). This technique is now becoming more widely used for producing beads or solutions for analysis by ICP or AAS. The main advantage of this method of sample preparation is the avoidance of lengthy and hazardous digestion procedures.

Typically, a bead would be made for subsequent dissolution in acid or for laser ablation. For liquids work however, it is more practical to make the solution directly. The sample is fused in the normal way but then poured directly into a stirred jar of acid solution. The whole process is automatic.
